When looking for a shelter site, keep in mind the type of shelter (protection) you need. However, you must also consider--

* How much time and effort you need to build the shelter.

* If the shelter will adequately protect you from the elements (sun, wind, rain, snow).

* If you have the tools to build it. If not, can you make improvised tools?

* If you have the type and amount of materials needed to build it.

Cost and availability of materials are pretty key considerations.
Also weight if you don't have mechanical lifting equipment.
You can get corrugated sheeting down to 0.1mm thick before they galvanize it.
Very light weight and relatively cheap from the far east. You can see it used in W Africa a lot.

Probably worth thinking about shelters in a couple of categories here -
-Pre fabricated components that fit to make a shelter (eg an existing tent)
- A design or idea that can be adapted for use with what is available on site.
(eg a plan for shelter using poles and a tensile sheeting material)

Cheers

Hey
Does anyone else remember that book SHELTER by Mountain Books in 1973?
Lots of different articles by different authors covering an amazingly loose collection of shelters from all around the world with loads of detail on construction.
Published in California I think. About A3 and pink covers.
Fantastic for $6.

Really @fukwit? Do you know where to buy this book?
It's interesting based on how you describe it. I want to check it.

The book 'Shelter' has been reprinted in 2000 and is by Lloyd Khan and B Easton. You can still get it for around a tenner on Amazon UK.
The following link should get you there. Happy reading (and sheltering).
